Men’s Herbal Vitality Formula
In 1539, in the Ottoman city of Manisa, Ayşe Hafsa Sultan — mother of Suleiman the Magnificent — fell gravely ill and the court physicians gave up. Suleiman turned to the Sufi Merkez Efendi, who compounded a paste of 41 herbs and spices. She recovered, and asked that it be shared with the people.
It is now a 500 year tradition where it is made and given to the people for free. It is prepared from 41 fresh spices, wrapped by 14 women, blessed by 28 imams, and scattered from the minaret of the Sultan Mosque to crowds who come from across Turkey to catch it.
UNESCO added the Mesir Macunu festival to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2012.
And its popular name today is "Turkish natural Viagra."
In the Canon of Medicine, finished around 1025, Ibn Sina placed saffron among the mufarrihat -- the gladdeners of the heart. That was a real category in that tradition, and a narrow one. Not a painkiller, not a purge, not something for a specific organ. A class of medicine whose stated purpose was to lift a person's spirit.
Saffron has withstood over 100 clinical trials investigating the safety, side effects and efficacy and showing across the board to support mood and emotional wellbeing -- which is to say the claim Ibn Sina made a thousand years ago has been measured, in the terms modern medicine uses, and it held. Very few old remedies survive that.
